Frequently Asked Questions

What is the role of an advisor to a student organization?

The role of the Advisor is to assist student organization in developing their organization by advising students on how to do things, what the college policy is, and how to develop their organization. Advisors are there to serve the students by being an objective ally.

What should I not do in my role as an advisor?

Our job is to support the students in their objectives and teach them how to get things done without doing it for them. Oftentimes we fall into a trap wanting to help the overextended student, but ultimately this is the time for them to learn how to manage their time and multitask. We can give pointers and give them a pep talk, but we do not want to inadvertently overstep and teach the student that someone else will always be there to pick up the pieces. Sometimes failure is a good teaching tool.

Do I have to attend all meetings of the student organization?

Student organization advisors are required to attend all meetings. The Comptroller Guidelines require that advisor co-sign student organization minutes, so advisors must be present at meetings.
