Bookkeeping Professional National Certificate from the American Institute of Professional Bookkeepers (AIPB) — SNAP Approved

The American Institute of Professional Bookkeepers or AIPB *** Cancelled for Fall 2021 semester ***

AIPB's mission is to achieve recognition of bookkeepers as accounting professionals, to keep bookkeepers up to date on changes in bookkeeping, accounting and tax, to answer bookkeepers' everyday bookkeeping and accounting questions, and certify bookkeepers who meet high, national standards. The AIPB was founded in 1987 with a current membership of 30,000.

Bookkeepers seeking to become nationally certified by AIPB must complete the following requirements:  

  • At least two years full-time experience or the part-time or freelance equivalent, which may be obtained before or after passing the examination.
  • Pass a 4-part national examination, including two parts given at any Prometric Test Center (there are over 300 nationwide).
  • Code of Ethics must be signed by each applicant.

There is no required order in which to complete these steps. Experience requirements may be acquired before or after taking the tests. Those who pass the certification tests before completing the experience requirements will receive a special letter from AIPB to show prospective employers.

There will be six (6) subjects covered on the national certification exam. Applicants will be tested on four (4) of these at a test center, as well as adjusting entries, error correction, payroll, and depreciation. They must achieve a grade of 75% to pass. Retakes can be scheduled after 30 days. The final exam covers Inventory, Internal Controls, and Fraud Prevention. This exam is found at the back of the workbook received during class. Students must achieve a grade of 70% to pass. The instructor will submit the completed final exams to AIPB for grading.
