English as a Second Language (ESL)

 

Gateway Community College (GCC) offers a variety of ESL classes to meet students’ academic, professional, and personal goals. Classes are scheduled mornings, afternoons, and evenings to meet students’ diverse needs. Some ESL classes can be used for foreign language credit.

ESL 139-Pronunciation III (optional)
*No other ESL classes should be taken at this level

+ Highly recommended for students in Nursing, Allied Health, College of Technology, and Business
++Students need a C or above in ESL 161 and ESL 178 to take English 101 and Communication 171

ESL Certificate Program

Prepares students whose native language is not English to acquire reading, writing, listening, speaking, and pronunciation skills at a level that will permit them to continue their college studies or to function with effective language skills in the national and global job market.

Earn an ESL Certificate of Achievement by completing the following courses (15 credits):
ESL 180-Reading V (3 credits)
ESL 178-Advanced Reading and Writing (3 credits)
ESL 161-Integrated Skills VI (3 credits)
ESL 139-Pronunciation III or ESL 144 Pronunciation IV (3 credits)
One Elective from any discipline offered at the college (3 credits)

 

Steps to Getting Started

1.   Submit an Applications Package to Admissions (Room N207)
2.   After you receive your Banner ID, schedule an ESL Placement Test in the Center for Educational Services (CES) (Room S205)
3.   Meet with an Advisor in the Counseling Office (Room N213)
4.   Complete your registration for courses (Room N214)

 

Literacy Volunteers of Greater New Haven

Gateway Community College is fortunate to have the onsite support of the Literacy Volunteers of Greater New Haven in Room N112 who provide English Language Learners with additional support.  Every month, the Literacy Volunteers schedules free classes at many levels.
