Gateway Community (GCC) students can connect more easily to the college community, as a new student email system started Monday.
GCC students can send and receive email with their new student email accounts through MS Office 365. Office 365 has four major services that students will be able to use: Exchange Online, Lync Online, Sharepoint Online and Office Web Apps. Exchange Online is the student email account and it will be the official communication channel between the student and the campus, said Lawrence R. Salay, GCC’s Director of Information Technology.
Lync Online will be available later this semester and Sharepoint Online and Office Web Apps will be available in January 2013. Lync Online is a communication tool, giving students the ability to IM with other campus Lync users, make online calls, attend online meetings and make video calls. Sharepoint is the collaboration tool which gives a group the ability to share and work off a single copy of a document.
Here are some instructions for the first-time email user:
Students may access Office 365 at http://portal.microsoftonline.com.
Students may log into Office 365 using their CCC NetID and passwords. All current CCC students within the re-admit period and newly admitted students will be given an Office 365 account.
Student’s email address will be in the form of “email@example.com.” The prefix will consist of the first letter of a student’s first name + first four letters of a last name + 4-digit numeric number (e.g., “firstname.lastname@example.org” for John Smith). Students will be able to look up their email address in myCommNet or using the NetID Lookup Utility.
From October 1 to December 31, students will continue to receive emails at their current email addresses. Starting January 1, 2013, the “preferred email address” in Banner for students will be reset to “mail.ct.edu”. After that, students will not be able to change the preferred email address within myCommNet portal. All CCC faculty members will also be given Office 365 accounts starting January 2013. More information will follow about faculty’s accounts.
The GCC Help Desk can answer questions related to students’ initial access when they are setting up their student email accounts after October 2012. After students have successfully created their accounts, the GCC Help Desk suggests they review the “Getting Started” area in Office 365. If students have further questions once they have created their accounts, they should contact Microsoft Office 365 technical support at 1-800-865-9408, option 4.
