Facetune_01-11-2018-20-43-27.JPGThe Greater Connecticut Chapter of the Public Relations Society of America  (PRSA) honored Evelyn (Evie) Gard of Gateway Community College in New Haven and Housatonic Community College in Bridgeport with the Practitioner of the Year award for 2018.

Gard, who is the Associate Dean of Communications and Marketing at both colleges, received the honor at the Mercury Awards dinner at the New Britian Museum of American Art on October 25. The award recognizes outstanding achievement in integrated public affairs services. This year's event, "The Art of Communication," was hosted by Matt Scott from FOX 61

Gard started at Gateway Community College in 2001 as director of Public Relations and Marketing. During her tenure, Gateway grew to become the largest of Connecticut’s Community Colleges. She was promoted to associate dean in 2017 when her responsibilities were expanded to include communications and marketing operations for Housatonic Community College in Bridgeport.

Derek Beere, president elect of the PRSA Greater Connecticut Chapter, described Gard as “the consummate public relations professional who does it all,” and praised her for spearheading the effort to consolidate two PRSA chapters into one and rebuilding the organization in the state. Beere said Gard showed great perseverance in rebuilding the PRSA’s presence to create a chapter that is “now stronger than ever as a unified chapter.”

Gard was president of the Southern Connecticut Chapter of PRSA from 2007 to 2009.  She assumed the role of president again in 2016 and worked to transition the organization into the Greater Connecticut Chapter.

Gard said that she was very grateful for the recognition and credited others for helping to make the moment happen.  “Every accomplishment is the realization of a team effort, so this award belongs to the fantastic communications team at Gateway Community College and Housatonic Community College, and with the dedicated Greater CT PRSA leadership team.”
