Athletics & Intramurals
Gateway Community College is a member of the National Junior College Athletic Association (Region XXI) and abides by its rules of eligibility and code of ethics. Intercollegiate sports include women’s and men’s basketball. Gateway also offers intramural sports.
Gateway Athletic Philosophy
Through its offering of intercollegiate, intramural and club sports, the athletics program seeks to promote the development of physical, mental, and emotional aspects of students. Through this program, the men and women of Gateway are provided with opportunities to develop their potential as athletes in activities appropriate to their level of ability. In its work, the program consciously cultivates the qualities of determination, perseverance, sportsmanship, and teamwork in promotion of positive self-concept and physical wellness. It is the program’s philosophy that athletic competition also fosters school spirit, develops collegiate pride, and promotes feelings of community.
At Gateway, you’ll be part of a winning tradition. The men’s team has made 7 appearances in the NJCAA Region XXI tournament. Several of our players have been named All-American as well as all New-England.
Our program focuses on the student athlete experience. Athletes have access to study halls, tutoring, and academic support services. In 2008, our woman’s basketball had an average GPA that was ranked an impressive 18th in the nation.
Play the Game
At a two-year school like Gateway Community College, your presence makes an immediate impact on the team. You won’t spend time warming the bench, you’ll spend time playing the game.
We have had numerous student athletes successfully transfer to four-year institutions including: Southern Connecticut State University, Albertus Magnus College, Central Connecticut State University, Curry College, and University of Bridgeport.
